AMPLIFIED 2015 | 2 Corinthians 11:14 And no wonder, since Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. |
Bible Question:
I know the KJV isn't what's used for this forum but in that version it says "Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light" I understand it to mean just what the NASB and Amplified say above. However in the area where my mother lives there is a man who calls himself a reverend and teaches that this means Satan is now a good angel and his angels are good angels. He says that the devil and satan are not the same. I know this is foolish doctrine, but I'm just wondering if it comes from someplace any of you are aware of. Some cult etc? Has anyone ever heard this teaching before? He also teaches that all the fallen angels are traveling back through us. They are the spirit we have in us and they are going through this life for a second chance at choosing Christ. Anybody ever heard this before? I can't remember the scripture he uses for this but I'll keep trying to. I am not concerned for my mom, but this man is very charasmatic and not a few of people I used to fellowship with when I lived there are following him now. Theresa |
Bible Answer: Dear Theresa, That fellow sounds pretty looney tunes to me. :-) I believe that Mormons have a similar view of Satan, although the nuances sound a bit different. Clearly he is using a modern definition for "transform" that would have been foreign to KJV era speakers of English. Here's some semi-random thoughts: We have five valuable things in understanding the truth of God: 1. He has provided us with the written Word, carefully protecting it, and using the Word itself to explain itself 2. He has regenerated us, so that we are now capable of understanding spiritual truth 3. He has provided us with the Holy Spirit to guide us 4. He has provided us with a rich and detailed church history from which we can learn 5. He has provided us with the church: pastors, teachers, brothers, sisters, etc. I can't recall exactly who said it, and I'm sure this is a paraphrase anyway: "If you uncover a doctrine that no other Christian has ever noticed before or that was/is held by known heretics... you should probably run the other way."
