NASB | 1 Corinthians 9:25 Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 9:25 Now every athlete who [goes into training and] competes in the games is disciplined and exercises self-control in all things. They do it to win a crown that withers, but we [do it to receive] an imperishable [crown that cannot wither]. |
Bible Question: How is it then, that we are to be both self controlled, and be filled (controlled) by the Holy Spirit, Eph 5:18? |
Bible Answer: Hi 4me2liveisChrist, I can't find your other question right now, so I'll give you some thoughts here if you don't mind. My view of the Holy Spirit is that there is both the Holy Spirit and the holy spirit. For my mind, I think of the holy spirit when considering the filling. We are indwelt by the Holy Spirit and Christ lives in us. But I say that there is the filling of the holy spirit. When I look at Ephesians 5:18 I do not get the idea of "control". The subjection and yielding to authority and the order of this authority is later on in the passage. For verse 18 I see not a Person, that is the Spirit, but I see a parallel to the idea of being drunk with wine. We are not to be filled with wine but rather with the spirit. Not filled with spirits, but with spirit. We are not to drink too much wine for that is debauchery. Rather be filled with spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Not only being filled with the words of the Scriptures, but applying them to your heart and singing and praising in your heart to the Lord. Colossians 1:16,"For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things have been created by Him and for Him." We are to be filled with all the things of God. But I do not think that we can be filled up with God Himself. He is the Head of the church and we are subjected to Him and His authority. But the filling of God Himself is found in Colossians 1:19. "For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fulness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself,..." For Titus 3:6, I agree with the Greek in that it reads "which" instead of "whom". Thus, for the preceding verse there I would render it as "holy spirit". Tutus 3:5, "He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the holy spirit, which He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,..." So I would have you consider the possibility of the holy spirit, a power, a word, and an influence as well as there being the Holy Spirit. We will not get drunk with this holy spirit but the filling should give us power for witness, praise, and thanksgiving for all things. Titus 1:14, "Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure [literally, good deposit] WHICH has been entrusted to you." From the heart, Ray |
