AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 9:22 To the weak I became [as the] weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means [in any and every way] save some [by leading them to faith in Jesus Christ]. |
Bible Question: What does it mean to be all things to all men? |
Bible Answer: Hi, mrf84! Paul took pride in his work (preaching the Good News); he understood that to further the cause he had to be flexible--as Jesus was flexible in dealing with people. Though a scholar, there would be times when that could prove to be a hinderance. Though born a Jew, this could also serve to advance or hinder his work--to the Jew he would teach using his Jewish background (much to do with the Old Testament and the Jewish views of the forefathers, etc.); yet, when teaching the Gentiles much of his Jewish ancestry and customs might prove to be a hinderance as cultural and religious flags might be raised in the heart and minds of his listeners... to them he would become a Gentile... Then there were the Christians... some truly knowledgeable, others mere novices... Paul would address them on familiar grounds so as not to hinder the growth of the new convert and not to undo the construct of the more advanced in the Faith! Jesus preached and taught to one and all--never did He obliterate the spirituality of his audience; never did He treat the ignorant harshly or without patience! True, He was exact and unyielding, but He would not use the Scripture as a weapon to destroy His accusors--Jesus simply spoke the Truth and allowed the Word to judge them! Paul, must have reasoned that if Jesus could reach all people because He did not placed Himself above any of His disciples (this in the matter of teaching and preaching, of course!), then he too could benefit the Kingdom of God by becoming all things to all men! God Bless! Angel |
