AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:1 Pursue [this] love [with eagerness, make it your goal], yet earnestly desire and cultivate the spiritual gifts [to be used by believers for the benefit of the church], but especially that you may prophesy [to foretell the future, to speak a new message from God to the people]. |
Bible Question: Was speaking in tounges only for back then or do people still speak in tounges? |
Bible Answer: In 1 Cor. 14 Paul is contrasting speaking in tongues to prophesy. In v.4, he says they build themselves up. Ego. In v.5, he says "I wish you all spoke in tongues. Why? The answer comes in v. 23. In v.6, tongues aren't edifying w/out one of the four things mentioned in that verse. Vv.7-9 can be compared to 1 Cor 13:1,15:52 and 1 Thess. 4:16 (as far as understanding a trumpet goes, among other Scriptures). It's just noise w/out understanding. But verse 10 says that every language that is spoken has meaning. Wycliffe translators have translated bibles into over 300 different languages including helping those w/out a language form one in order to make a bible that is readable for them. If you call that speaking in an unknown tongue then yes, God does still speak in tongues. But your problem is gonna come in 13:10. And your going to have to make a decision on if that "perfect" thing is the bible or if it's literally Jesus. Let me encourage you to apply Acts 17:11. It's a great verse! Don't give up searching the truth out.God will show it to you indeed! God bless. I hope this helps, at least some. |
