Bible Question: I have been happily married for almost 9 years now but I did not get married through the church. I did it through the court. My husband just recently went on a church retreat and is now telling me we should get married and I don't want to becuase we already did but not through the church. I will eventually do it at a later date but I do not want to right now. The reason he's all upset now is because he can not receive Communion. I have benn a Catholic all my life and I still go every Sunday and on special occasions. Can he receive Communion even though he is not married through the Church or does he have to wait? |
Bible Answer: Dear Liz, Welcome to the forum! There is no Scriptural injunction in this respect. If you took your vows in the court, then you are considered married from the standpoint of the Bible and the institutions of men. I am sorry for the struggle of conscience that this issue is causing you. Our forum is founded on the concept that doctrine is derived only from the Bible (Old and New Testaments). We would therefore be at odds with what the Roman Catholic Church teaches, since they deem their traditional teachings as having the greater authority. However, every individual congregation has the right, obligation, and authority to determine a person's worthiness of participation in the ordinances. They may choose to include or exclude people by whatever standards they may choose. Part of the responsibility of a congregation is to promote the purity of the church. Therefore, I may not agree with the RCC in the authority by which they have arrived at their standards, but I cannot deny that the Scripture requires every local congregation to have standards. I thought it best to make sure that you understood these distinctions. In Him, Doc |
