Bible Note: Dear Atdcross, Jumping in, as is my wont... :-) Many of the Pharisees were, indeed, blameless. Christ affirmed this when He told everyone that their righteousness needed to exceed even that of the Pharisees (Matthew 5:20)! Jesus taught -- and Paul, in earlier chapters of Romans, affirmed -- that you could look righteous on the outside, without being righteous on the inside. In the passage of Philippians 3:6b, Paul is not asserting his own righteousness. Note Philippians 3:6a, "Concerning zeal, persecuting the church." Paul knew that he had been a wicked, sinful man (1 Timothy 1:15), but one granted righteousness by an judicial act of God (Philippians 3:9; Romans 6:18). The prior chapters of Romans have made it clear that sin's blackness is black indeed. In Him, Doc |
