Bible Question:
I am trying to get a handle on "the Law" and grace. Define "the Law." Define "grace." What is the relationship between the two? Can they co-exist or be separated? Explain. What is the purpose of the Law? How does "the Law" or any law effect our lives, today? Are we told we don't have to follow "the Law"? Steve |
Bible Answer: What is Law and Grace Part 3 The law includes the ten commandments 2 Corinthians 3 7. Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, fading though it was, 8. will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? 9. If the ministry that condemns men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! Hebrews 10 1. The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming--not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. John 1 17. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Matthew 5 17. Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. John 19 30. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Hebrews 10 12. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God. 13. Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool, Romans 10 4.Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. Galatians 3 13. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." 14. He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. Galatians 4 4. But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, 5. to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Hebrews 9 15. For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance--now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. Romans 8 3. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, 4. in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. |
