Bible Question:
I am trying to get a handle on "the Law" and grace. Define "the Law." Define "grace." What is the relationship between the two? Can they co-exist or be separated? Explain. What is the purpose of the Law? How does "the Law" or any law effect our lives, today? Are we told we don't have to follow "the Law"? Steve |
Bible Answer: Steve, Been there. Done that. Read Galatians 2:16-21. Take hold of verse 16 and 21 respectively. Grace is being GIVEN something that YOU DO NOT DESERVE. Mercy is NOT being given what YOU DO DESERVE. If you could follow the law and obey it on your own in your own flesh, then Jesus has died in vain, because it would mean that you could stand before God and say "I am holy because I have kept/obeyed the law". But that can't be because as it says in verse 16 "...for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." In addition to those verses, read Isaiah 64:6 (and 7). The Bible says that NO flesh will boast before the Lord. And as long as we rely on our flesh to "produce" righteousness we will be HIGHLY disappointed because sooner or later your flesh will fail you whether you want it to or not. That is why so many Christians think that they can "lose" their salvation. That is a lie straight from the Devil. If you trust Jesus to save you then believe it. Believe that He has victory and power over sin, death and the grave. If He has power to save you from the wrath of God and "eternal" Hell, surely He has power over your temporal sins here on earth (lying, stealing, fornication, adultery, pride, etc). You - in and of yourself - do not have power over sin. Jesus does, and as long as you REST in His righteousness, and the power He has GIVEN us over sin, you will be living by grace. (Read Revelation 5 also) Steve, I HIGHLY recommend you read a book called Grace plus Nothing by Jeff Harkin. This book is an absolute blessing and it truly taught me about living by grace. I pray that this book teaches you to live by grace, not works. God Bless you. |
