AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 16:17 ¶ I urge you, brothers and sisters, to keep your eyes on those who cause dissensions and create obstacles or introduce temptations [for others] to commit sin, [acting in ways] contrary to the doctrine which you have learned. Turn away from them. |
Subject: We are to do the opposite of this verse. |
Bible Note: Hmmm... do the opposite, eh? Well, in the first place, one would have to be able to show irony in this verse, i.e., that the meaning is opposite to what it says, and that would be hard to do. And secondly, wherein is the logic that leads to the conclusion that one is to "cause dissensions and hindrances for the sake of the Bible teaching we have learned"? Dissensions among whom? Hindrances to what? And how do these dissensions and hindrances, whatever you envision them to be, fit into any sort of pattern that could be "for the sake of the Bible teaching we have learned"? Lastly, does your 'doctrine of opposites' -- if one may so characterize it -- spill over to other scriptural passages as well? At the conclusion of Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10, should one interpret Jesus' words to the lawyer in v. 37 (concerning showing mercy) to mean, "Go and do otherwise"? --Hank |
