Subject: Debatable Issues |
Bible Note: Mark: I agree. Romans 14 is talking about lifestyle, not doctrine. That's why when you asked, "Does Romans 14 have any application to matters of Theology, Ecclesiology, or the other ologies?", my reply was "I THINK Romans 14 PROBABLY applies to "secondary non-essentials..." What debatable lifestyle issues and secondary doctrine have in common is: - whether affirmed or denied they have no bearing on the status of a person before God. - Any of them can be denied, or affirmed, and regeneration is not in question. - Denominational differences often result due to these issues. But, no, I misspoke if I implied that doctrinal differences, however minor, are in the same category as debatable lifestyle issues. Romans 14 is definitely not discussing doctrinal differences. Moreover, differences in doctrine are not "just" opinions, if the emphasis is on the word "just". Someone will say, "Well, that's just your interpretation, or just your opinion." Of course it's someone's interpretation. Of course it's their opinion, but it's not just those things as long as people are not simply sharing their point of view, but are also sharing their reasons why they have that point of view. Neither am I saying that every doctrine or passage of Scripture has two or more equally valid interpretations. That is simply not true. (It seems that the more I write, the more I have to clarify so that others who read this will not misunderstand my meaning. :-)) Mark, I truly appreciate your questions because they challenge me to stop and think more carefully before I reply. Grace to you, Kalos * * * * * * * * * * * * * For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. 2 Tim 4:3a NIV |
