Subject: Christian Doctrine |
Bible Note: INTRODUCTION: Anyone who attempts to write on doctrinal matters in our day feels almost obliged to justify the need. The spirit of this modern age, both inside and outside religious circles, is decidedly against the setting forth of definite doctrines in any realm. Many Christian people are impatient with and even suspicious of doctrine. The very word conjures up all kinds of evil associations in the minds of some -- narrow-mindedness, bigotry, intolerance and divisiveness, to name a few. ........ Many factors in contemporary society have contributed to this attitude. The ecumenical movement has minimized doctrinal distinctiveness for years for the sake of unity. In the academic realm there is a widespread feeling that all truth is relative, that there are no absolutes, that nothing can be known for sure, especially religious truth. There is a general revolt against any authoritarian approach to truth and life. All these factors, along with others, have helped to create an anti-doctrinal climate in our churches today. This attitude is illustrated by the remarks of a little old lady who approached her pastor with the question, "Why can't we just worship God and forget about all this doctrine stuff?" In a subsequent post I will attempt to address this lady's question ........ A growing number of religious leaders support the anti-doctrinal spirit of today. They deny the need for setting forth and doctrines of the Christian faith. Christianity, it is claimed, is primarily a matter of experience or feeling good -- good will, the 'warm fuzzies,' and practical social activities. The doctrinal aspects of Christianity, so they say, are non-essential and may even be a hindrance to "enjoying" their relationship with Christ. ......... It is acknowledged that the experience of the Christian faith, and the elements of good will and practical social activities, i.e., fellowship of the saints, are all of them vital parts of the Christian faith. But doctrines are also essential. In the next post I will attempt to give four reasons why Christian doctrine is absolutely necessary. --Hank |
