Bible Question:
I was baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. I was told in order to be saved that one must be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, is there a difference? Tina Willis |
Bible Answer: Saved by Grace, The churches have been divided over this issue for as long as I can remember. Should we be baptized in the Father, Son, Holy Spirit or Jesus's names only? I concur with what Hank and Norrie have said, but we must take the theology one step further. Take the word Jesus, and take it back to the original Greek and what does the word itself mean? NT:2424 NT:2424 Iesous (ee-ay-sooce'); of Hebrew origin [OT:3091]; Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites: OT:3091 Yehowshuwa (yeh-ho-shoo -ah); or Yehowshu- a (yeh-ho-shoo-ah); from OT:3068 and OT:3467; Jehovah-saved; Jehoshua (i.e. Joshua), the Jewish leader: -Jehoshua, Jehoshuah, Joshua. Compare OT:1954, OT:3442. OT:3068 Yehovah (yeh-ho-vaw); from OT:1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God: KJV - Jehovah, the Lord. Compare OT:3050, OT:3069. OT:1961 hayah (haw-yaw); a primitive root [compare OT:1933]; to exist, i.e. be or become, come to pass (always emphatic, and not a mere copula or auxiliary): KJV - beacon, X altogether, be (-come), accomplished, committed, like), break, cause, come (to pass), do, faint, fall, follow, happen, X have, last, pertain, quit (oneself-), require, X use. OT:1933 hava' (haw-vaw); or havah (haw-vaw); a primitive root [compare OT:183, OT:1961] supposed to mean properly, to breathe; to be (in the sense of existence): KJV - be, X have. Now that we have Jesus's name broke down, let's look at the name of God. OT:3050 Yahh (yaw); contraction for OT:3068, and meaning the same; Jah, the sacred name: KJV - Jah, the Lord, most vehement. Compare names in "-iah," "-jah." Look above for #3068 that was used for the translation for Jesus. As we can see the name of God is within Jesus's name as is stated above. So when you put it together the name Jesus means God's saviour. John 14:16-17 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. KJV Matt.18:20 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. KJV So as we can see when we call upon the Name of Jesus, we are calling upon the name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Even the average person knew this at the time when Jesus was here upon the earth. for as it says, Matt 21:9 9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. KJV NT:5614 hosanna (ho-san-nah'); of Hebrew origin [OT:3467 and OT:4994]; oh save!; hosanna (i.e. hoshia-na), an exclamation of adoration: Does not it also say in John 1:1-2, John 1:1-2 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. KJV John 10:30 30 I and my Father are one. KJV For as we can see according to the Word that to baptize in the Father, Son, Holy Spirit is correct and to baptize in the name of Jesus is also correct. So this battle in the churches today is ridiculous. All it does is dvide the many members of the body of Christ (Jesus). Also stated by Hank and Norrie that the most important is Grace and Faith. John 3:16 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (from New International Version) Eph 2:8 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: KJV Rom 10:8-13 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (from New International Version) I pray with all my heart that this senseless division of baptism would end. For they are both correct. I hope with all my heart that this has helped you.
