AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, "Repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways, accept and follow Jesus as the Messiah] and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ because of the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
Bible Question:
I've had a question on my mind for some time now, and would appreciate a straight forward answer. Acts 2:38 in the NASB (pre-1996) reads; And Peter said to them, "Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Updated Version reads; Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. My question is, for what reason or purpose did the Updated Version disclude "let" from this particular verse? Thanks for your consideration, Clydson |
Bible Answer: Greetings Clydson! I can't speak for the translators, but I may be able to explain what has happened. The word 'let' is not actually in the text. The verb 'be baptized' is a third person, singlar imperative. In English, it would literally read 'he be bapitzed'. That makes for akward reading! ;-) So, many translators have adopted the practice translating third person imperatives with the word 'let' and then translate it more as a second person imperative. For some reason, the updated version has dropped this convention. However, the word 'let' is not really in the text anyway. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
