Bible Question: In Genesis 11:10 we have the beginnings of the geneaologies of the nations. The nations all have come from one of three sons of Noah. Does anyone have a good listing by which we can clearly see the nations today and which son of Noah they are from? |
Bible Answer: Greetings itiswritten! All the people of the world since the Flood have descended from the three sons of Noah (Acts 17:26). The three sons of Noah were Shem, Ham and Japheth (Gen. 10:1). * The sons of Japheth settled in an area that stretched across Eurasia from the Black Sea and Caspian Sea to Spain: 1. Gomer (lived in the eastern part of Turkey near the Black Sea and also in the upper Euphrates region [Ezek. 38:5-6]) 2. Magog (Area now occupied by Russia [Ezekiel 38:2]). 3. Madai (the later Medes, in the area of present day Iran, all the way to the Caspian Sea). 4. Javan (Ionia [southern Greece], southern Italy, Cyprus, western Asia Minor, and south of Spain [Tarshish - Jonah 1:3]). 5. Tubal (Pontus [eastern Asia minor]). 6. Meshech (Moschian Mountains [from eastern Asia minor north to the Black Sea]). 7. Tiras (the Thrace of later times). * The sons of Ham spread out from southwestern Asia and later spread west along the Mediterranean coast of northeast Africa: 1. Cush (the upper Nile region, Mesopotamia, south of Egypt, and Arabia [Ezekiel 27:20-22]). 2. Mizraim (means "two Egypts," a reference to Upper and Lower Egypt). 3. Put (either Libya or the land the ancient Egyptians called Punt (modern Somalia)). 4. Canaan (Palestine, bordering the Mediterranean Sea). * The sons of Shem occupied the area north of the Persian Gulf (Gen. 10:22): 1. Elam (settled in the area east of Mesopotamia [Persia]). 2. Asshur (an early name for Assyria in northern Mesopotamia). 3. Arpachshad (southern Mesopotamia). 4. Lud (Lydians of Asia Minor [western Turkey]). 5. Aram (located northeast of Canaan, in the area known today as Syria). In this way, we can get a better understanding through history of how the nations and peoples spread out and where they began to populate the earth again..
