Subject: What about christian as a name? |
Bible Note: Hello, tduplechain - How crass of anyone to hurt your feelings by disagreeing with your conclusions! Why should anyone think you daft simply because you say you are a disciple of Christ but not a Christian. Makes perfect sense to me. For example, everyone knows there are no Frenchmen in France, that General Eisenhower should never be accused of being in the military, and that Lassie should never be called canine simply because she's a dog. ...... And as for the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John being the word of God and the other 62 books of the Bible being good doctrine but bereft of the power that the four Gospels have -- well, you know how it is, the four Gospels make such a skinny little book, so the compilers of the Canon probably decided that they needed some more books to use as fillers to make a fat book that looked more impressive and gave Bible buyers more for their money. There is a slightly troublesome verse, 2 Timothy 3:16, that says something about ALL Scripture being God inspired, but since that verse appears in one of Paul's letters and not in the word of God itself (i.e., Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), I guess we don't need to become uptight about what Paul said. ..... And as for calling ourselves Christians, well, there's a note in Acts 11:26 about the disciples being called Christians first in Antioch ..... and then again in 26:28 we find King Agrippa using the word ..... and finally Peter uses it in 1 Peter 4:16, telling the followers of Christ not to be ashamed to suffer as a Christian. But, neither Acts nor Peter's letter amounts to much, not being one of the four Gospels, which are the word of God, it's probably better to concentrate on Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John and not waste too much time on these other books. But I must confess that I do love reading such books as Genesis and Job and Ruth and the Psalms and Isaiah. But I try to limit myself so that I can have plenty of time for reading the word of God: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. --Hank |
