Bible Question: What name were the Christ followers of the early church called during the years following Christ's birth? |
Bible Answer: Hello angel77715! Acts 11:26 states, "When he found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year the two met with the people of the church and taught a large group. It was at Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians." (Today's English Version) Before this time, I do not believe that the disciples of Christ referred to themselves in any other way than as simply the "disciples of Christ." If my memory is correct, the term "Christian" was at first a 'derogatory' term used by the Jewish and Roman authorities of the day, and it was only later adopted by the disciples while they faced persecution as recorded in the Book of Acts. --Nolan --Nolan |
