Bible Question:
I've found two divergent translations of the opening verse in Luke. "... that Jesus began to do and teach" (NASB, and others) or "....that Jesus did and taught from the beginning" (NRSV) One makes it feel like the whole Gospel of Luke was the "beginning" of Christ's ongoing ministry. The other states that Luke's Gospel runs from the "beginning" of Christ's ministry, to the point of the ascension. Can anyone shed light on which of these two translations are more accurate on this point? |
Bible Answer: Greetings JustReadMark! The NRSV differed from every translation that I consulted on this verse. As far as the Greek goes, I don't see that there is any doubt that the NASB (and others) are accurate in their translation. There simply isn't anything in the text that I would translate as 'from the beginning'. The text actually says, "which He began the Jesus to do and to teach." So, the NASB (and others) are very literal in their translation. The main verb is 'he began'. The verbs 'to do' and 'to teach' are both present infinitives that describe what it was that He began. The NRSV treats this main verb as a noun for some reason and turns the two infinitives into main verbs. I hope this helps! Your Brother |
