AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 5:24 ¶ "I assure you and most solemnly say to you, the person who hears My word [the one who heeds My message], and believes and trusts in Him who sent Me, has (possesses now) eternal life [that is, eternal life actually begins--the believer is transformed], and does not come into judgment and condemnation, but has passed [over] from death into life. |
Bible Question:
What does Jesus mean? Is he teaching that a Christian should be able to look back to a time when they passed from death unto life? Peace Robert |
Bible Answer: The first part of this verse is the "IF" portion of the verse. Romans 10:17 says that "faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ." The verse says that if we hear his words, and believe (i.e. repent), then the second part of the verse takes place. That is we receive eternal life. The Bible also says in Romans 8:1 "Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Once we are saved, we can not undergo the judgement that an unsaved person will experience when Christ returns. This is not to say that Christians will not be corrected when we sin. But, Christians are spared the final judgement. The final portion speaks of the fact that all of us are born dead in our sins. When we are saved, we are brought to life in Christ. It is interesting to note that the "THEN" portion of this verse comes as a result of our hearing AND believing. It is not something that we work toward. Hope this helps. Jay |
