Bible Question:
Paul said that "I desire to speak five words with my mind, that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue." 1 Corinthians 14:19. I wonder if Jesus is speaking five words of power in the third chapter of John? |
Bible Answer: Hello again Ray, Yes, Paul does mention the word "five." However, the "point" of the verse is not five, one, or twenty. His point is that regardless of how many words he speaks in a different tongue, he would much prefer that the 'hearers' of his words receive instruction from what he says rather then for their ears to be tickled with the soft noises of tongues, which they cannot understand. Here is a bit of commentary on 1 Cor. 14:19.. "1Co 14:19 - I had rather--The Greek verb more literally expresses this meaning, "I WISH to speak five words with my understanding (rather) than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue"; even the two thousandth part of ten thousand. The Greek for "I would rather," would be a different verb. Paul would NOT wish at all to speak "ten thousand words in an unknown tongue."
