Subject: You have to be born of water and spirit |
Bible Note: Greetings CDBJ! I have never thought that it was very unusual seeing the water of John 3:5 as a reference to physical birth since the very next first specifically mentions physical birth. John 3:6 - "Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit." Further, Nicodemus specifically mentions physical birth in v. 4 as well. John 3:4 - "‘‘How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. ‘‘Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!” In light of these two verses, I have always understood v. 5 to simply being saying that one must be born both physically and spiritually.
