AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 11:51 Now he did not say this [simply] on his own initiative; but being the high priest that year, he [was unknowingly used by God and] prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, [Is 53:8] |
Bible Question: Caiaphas, who was serving as the high priest at the time of Jesus, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, "and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad." (v.51,52) So, if being the high priest and trusting this prophecy to come from God, then why was it so "expedient" for one man to die for the people? (v. 50; John 18:14) Why did this "prophecy" seem to add extra vigor to their attempts to kill Jesus? (John 11:53; Matt. 26:3,4) Was the prophecy simply misinterpreted? It is interesting to note that the 'high priest' (Caiaphas) was sentencing the Ultimate High Priest (Hebrews 5:9,10) to death. |
Bible Answer: Nolan: I don't believe that the prophecy was a misinterpretation. I find it to be a fullfilling prophecy. Jesus knowing His hour was at hand had to set things in order for the fullfillment to come to pass. Surely the high priest knew the scriptures and was, as many before hand had been, ready for the One that might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad." It almost seems as if Caiaphas knows what its going to take for this to come to pass as he felt it was expedient. And yes it is very interesting to note that the 'high priest' (Caiaphas) was sentencing the Ultimate High Priest (Hebrews 5:9,10) to death. KJV Isaiah 49:6 6. And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth KJV John 10:16-18 16. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. 17. Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 18. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. KJV Ephesians 2:14-17 14. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; 15. Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16. And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: 17. And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. Its my belief that God used Caiaphas in the same way He used Pharaoh. To accomplish His divine plan for us all. God Bless |
