AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 11:51 Now he did not say this [simply] on his own initiative; but being the high priest that year, he [was unknowingly used by God and] prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, [Is 53:8] |
Bible Question (short): Caiaphas's prophecy misinterpreted? |
Question (full): Caiaphas, who was serving as the high priest at the time of Jesus, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, "and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad." (v.51,52) So, if being the high priest and trusting this prophecy to come from God, then why was it so "expedient" for one man to die for the people? (v. 50; John 18:14) Why did this "prophecy" seem to add extra vigor to their attempts to kill Jesus? (John 11:53; Matt. 26:3,4) Was the prophecy simply misinterpreted? It is interesting to note that the 'high priest' (Caiaphas) was sentencing the Ultimate High Priest (Hebrews 5:9,10) to death. |
