Bible Question: Years ago on TV I saw President Eisenhower sitting in church during a prayer. His eyes were fully open. It struck me as odd then (I was very young), having been taught from the cradle to close my eyes in prayer. To pray with eyes closed -- is it custom or commandment? --Hank |
Bible Answer: Hi Hank, I agree with Searcher...there are no obvious verses that tell you to pray with your eyes closed but I think we are taught that to help us not to be distracted and stay focused on the prayers and talking to the Lord instead of on the pray-er and whatever may be going on around us. I pray with open or closed eyes depending on different situations...and in different postures...face up or head bowed...sometimes standing, sitting, kneeling or flat on my face on the floor...walking in the supermarket or driving in the car (too dangerous to close our eyes there!!)I could go on and on but I'm sure you get the picture! God's blessings! Hugger |
