Bible Question:
Thank you for your response. The first death you refer to began before the cross after Gethsemane, according to Isaiah 53:4-5. Matthew 27:50-51 and Mark 15:37-38 both record Jesus as breathing his last and then the curtain of the temple is ripped in two, both accounts as a part of the catastrophic occurences upon Jesus' death. Luke 23:45-46 records the curtain having been ripped in two prior to Jesus breathing his last. My question is when exactly did the curtain rip in two, before as in Luke, or after as in Matt and Mark, Jesus breathed his last? |
Bible Answer: Greetings LuvHisWords! The only gospel that gives a precise time indication for the tearing of the curtain is Mt. 27:50-51. "And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. 51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split." Though not as specific, Mark agrees with Matthew on this point. Luke does not differ from the other two. He simply lists a series of things that took place during the three hours of darkness without specifically detailing when each event took place. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
