Bible Question: In 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 it says that when God decends from Heaven the dead who have known Christ will rise first , and then those living who know Christ will follow. I've always been told that as soon as we die, our spirits go straight to Heaven. I'm confused. Please help! |
Bible Answer: Hi L, In my understanding of the bible, you are talking about two different things. What happens when we die, and what happens when Christ comes again at the End. When we die, our Spirit leaves our body to be in the presence of the Lord. When Christ comes again we receive a resurrected, imperishable body. This is neccessary in order to live with Christ during the Thousand Year Reign (see Rev 20) What happens when Christ comes in Glory: In 1Cor 15:35 Paul talks about the 'Ressurection Body' v35"But some will ask, 'How are the dead raised, with what kind of body?' v42 "So it will be with the ressurection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in Glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body." This takes place at the 2nd and final coming of Christ. Whenever His coming is mentioned, it is with the trumpets and the angels, not a secret or silent coming. Secondly, What happens when we die?: Paul tells us in 2Cor 5:6 "Therefore, we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. v8: We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord." Paul again in Phi 1:21 "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose: I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far." Hope this brings you some clarity, Heardmycry |
