Bible Question: Where in the bible is the scripture "Thou shall not take the name of the Lord in vain" and please explain it's meaning....thanks... |
Bible Answer: Greetings! The verse you are seeking is found in Exodus 20:7. It is commonally believed that taking the Lord's name in vain means to use it in cursing. However, the word means something more like 'to make His name meaningless'. Thus, it refers to using His name in false promises, or bringing disgrace to His name. Here is what the Bible Knowledge Commentary says about this verse: "20:7. The name of . . . God should be honored and protected. The Israelites were not to use His name for any idle, frivolous, or insincere purpose (such as speaking His name when taking an oath with no intention of keeping it, Lev. 19:12). People should not use His name for selfish or evil purposes (cf. Ps. 139:20; also see comments on Deut. 5:11), thereby seeking to usurp His authority." I hope this helps!
