Subject: Is it by works or by grace? |
Bible Note: Prayer is a vast subject and cannot be fully and completely covered by quoting a verse or two. Prayer involves much more than asking God for things. This may be a poor analogy, but I'll give it my best. Suppose you are a young child living at home with a very loving earthly father. So far your earthly father has never failed to provide for your material needs. You have no cause to doubt that he will continue to provide. Prayer is basically talking to and with God. So if your earthly father is a good provider, do you use that as a reason to stop talking to him? Does Jesus teach that all your needs will automatically be met without the need of prayer? Matt 7:7 (Amplified) Keep on asking and it will be given you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking [reverently] and [the door] will be opened to you. John 16:24 (ESV) Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. Moreover, the Bible says that among other reasons, You have not because you ask not. It also says in James that at times "You do not have." "You ask and do not receive." James 4:2-3 (ESV) You do not have, because you do not ask. [3] You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. |
