Subject: Why identify the cities and not the man? |
Bible Note: Hi mommapbs, In looking at Luke 10:25-29 one has to look at who is speaking in the verses. In verse 26 Jesus said to the man, "How does it [the Law] read to you?" In verse 28 he is told, "If you do this, you will live". And in verse 29 he wishes to justify himself. 1) So, lets put the Law in lower and upper case English for our understanding instead of the all caps Hebrew. How are we to understand this and apply it for ourselves? Verse 27, "And he answered and said, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and will all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." This is the Law for the people, for it says that "you shall"...and if "you do this", then you will live. So the passage reads in verse 29, "But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" This is still talking about the people or in particular, this person. 2) Now in application for today, we can say that we can seek to justify ourselves and say "And who is my Neighbor?" We want to love the Neighbor as we do ourselves. A Scripture that comes to mind is Matthew 25:31-46. Note this comparison. Matthew 25:44, "Then they themselves also will answer, saying, "Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?' 45 "Then ***He will answer them, saying, 'Truly **I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to *Me.' 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." Luke 11:20, "He who is not with ***Me is against **Me; and he who does not gather with *Me, scatters." If He is our (n)Neighbor we shoud invite Him in. If we help our neighbors it should be as if we were doing it for Him. God's blessings to you, mommapbs, and to our neighbors. From the heart, Ray |
