AMPLIFIED 2015 | Luke 1:5 ¶ In the days of Herod [the Great], king of Judea, there was a certain priest whose name was Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was a descendant of Aaron [the first high priest of Israel], and her name was Elizabeth. |
Bible Question: Does the bible state that priests are not to marry? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Pgs! The apostle Peter was married (1 Cor. 9:5, Mark 1:30), and that fact alone contradicts the "requirement of celibacy" that is imposed upon those who seek the priesthood. The irony goes even further for Catholics when a person considers the fact that Catholics believe that Peter was the first pope. If Peter was married, then why is it that all popes, cardinals and priests after him did not follow in his footsteps by getting married? No, the Bible does not say that those who are ministers, priests, or overseers should not be able to marry. In fact, it almost states the very opposite! (1 Tim. 3:2) Blessings to you, Makarios |
