Bible Note: Greetings Ebrain! Part of the problem is the way in which the word ' contradiction' is used. A true contradiction is A and not A at the same time. A man cannot be blind and not blind at the same moment and in the same way. Neither of your examples fits this definition. Let's look at both of your examples. 1) It is entirely possible that both the mother and James and John asked Jesus the same question exactly as reported in both accounts. In which case, both accounts would be accurate. It would be difficult to call this a contradiction. 2) As for your second example, are we going to say that a 1st century writer had to use 20th century standards for quotations? An indirect quotation can also be accurate. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
