Bible Question: In various scriptures, Jesus comes in contact with people who are possesed or have demons. The signs are different, but in a few cases, they display signs of what psychology today would label with personality disorders or mental disorders. Such as the man in the tombs in Matt 5:1-20. My questions are did Jesus ever send anyone to get herbs or anything to help their dispositions, or did he simply see they were deomonically oppressed and cast out the demons? Is there scriptures that back up anything about psychology such as going to counselors or taking drugs? I don't want to offend anyone that feels they need drugs to survive whatever medical or mental situation they are in, but I believe more people could be healed if they were delivered from the demons that are opressing or possesing them. I just want to know what the bible says about it all. |
Bible Answer: bandaid: Perhaps, we have become so educated that we have lost the belief in demons? We all have heard about Jeffery Dalhmar and his eating human flesh, and the many people he killed. This was in my opinion, a man who was demon possesed. Charles Manson is also a person I would say is demon possesed. These men are at the top of my example list of demon possesion. I believe that when Jesus healed those whom He said had demons, these people had more than medications could ever do for them. When Jesus cast out demonds there was clear evidence demons were present and active in the persons life. I think filth was involved in such demon possesed lives. I have never have been involved with anyone who said they were possesed by demons before they got saved. The stories I have heard about have been few, but as I recall they happened in South America, and places wwhere witchcraft and spiritualism were taken place. There are medical conditions that do cause people to act in very strange ways. For example Alzheimers Disease, can bring out words and actions that are opposite of the way the people once lived and believed. This disease is dreadful, and is not demon possesion. We do know that much about the brain and how disease can alter the thinking and actions of genuinely ill people. There are those who are quick to label all bad actions as personality disorders, that covers sin fairly easy. In my opinion drunkeness is a sin that makes a person dependant upon drinking even more, the result is a disease, but sin is at the core of the problem. Such are the case with many mental problems. This same Jesus who healed people long ago, still heals today. Jesus uses Doctors, Pastors, and other Christians to help heal today. To be honest prayer and the work of the Holy Spirit, should guide those who are trained to know the difference in real mental illness and sin, or genuine disorders. The key is prayer and wisdom. Many in the field of psychology are not Christians, and even some who are Christians, have adopted humanistic psychology, which keeps the person locked into a never endind cycle of never getting to the real solution which is surrendering to Christ and becoming a genuine follower. I hope this helps. justme |
