NASB | Matthew 6:16 ¶ "Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 6:16 ¶ "And whenever you are fasting, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they put on a sad and dismal face [like actors, discoloring their faces with ashes or dirt] so that their fasting may be seen by men. I assure you and most solemnly say to you, they [already] have their reward in full. [Is 58:5] |
Bible Question:
Do anyone know about true fasting? I believe that when you fast, you have to set everything a side and focus your all on the Lord. I know that everyone has to work and do other things but if you look at it, you might fast 8-10 hours and you only spend 1-2 hours with the Lord. I have heard of great men of God, when they go one a fast they go off by themselves and set themselves apart from everyone, Tv, phones and everything. I'm saying all of this because I belive in fasting and I have said to myself I will just fast for 3-4 hours and skip a meal and during that time, just fast and pray. God looks on the heart and will honor my prayer more than someone who fast for 10 hours but don't spend anytime with him. Do anyone have any opionions on fasting? Thanks and be blessed |
Bible Answer: I think it would be best to quote from our Lord, as recorded by Matthew: 16"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 17But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. After studying this and all the other scriptures, I have to conclude that our Father would rather that we fast in a private manner as far as He is concerned. After all, what we're really after is to gain a much closer relationship with Him. If it's for any other reason, then we know what that reward is already. It seems pretty clear from God's Word as what our position should be but I'd love to see other opinions about this subject. God bless. |
