Bible Question: How is it possible to hide our righteousness (Matt.6:1) but to let our light shine before men (Matt.5:16)? |
Bible Answer: The acts of righteousness in Matt 6:1 are those that you do in order to gain the praise of men - like when the Pharisees would pray loudly in public so that people would give THEM the praise for being so "righteous". Jesus called them hypocrites for doing that. It's like it says in Isaiah 29:13 "... this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me." On the contrary, letting your light shine (Matt 5:16) are acts that you do in order to give praise and honor to GOD. The difference can be summed up: Who are you trying to bring honor to ... you or God? |
