Bible Question: Seems someone always bring up the Bible contradiction of an eye or an eye in OT and Jesus saying turn the other cheeck in NT. Any explanations? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Norrie, God's purpose for this law was mercy. He wanted to make sure that the punishement fit the crime. The law was given (in Lev 24:20) to limit vengeance which was sometimes taken to the extreme. It was never meant to give permission for acts of personal retaliation. When we get wronged, ususally our first inclanation in to get even. But in this Jesus is telling us to do good to those who hurt us. Instead of getting even pray for those who hurt you. People then and people today use the law as a scapegoat for getting the personal satisfaction of getting even. prayon |
