Bible Question:
In St. Matthew 27, verses 52 and 53 we read: "And the graves were opened, and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many" This must have been the MIRACLE of the MILLENNIUM. Why is this miracle not even mentioned in the other gospels? |
Bible Answer: Hi Trykkleif, Matthew 27:51-53 appear to be relating things that happened at the same time that Jesus gave up His spirit like the splitting of the veil of the temple. The verses appear to relate the earthquakes and the things that were happening then but also things that will happen later on. The tombs were opened and many bodies of the saints were raised and came out of the tombs *after His resurrection, verse 53. Verse 54 then continues with the narrative of the centurion's witness after Jesus gave up His spirit. I think that the miracle of the bodies being resurrected is simply the proof of who Jesus was; just as His resurrection showed that He was who He said He was with power. Their resurrections, which I would suppose were temporary just like Lazarus', are still of miniscual significance when compared to the knowledge of the power of the Son of God. The NASB margin may say that the Greek could read "Or possibly, a son of God, or, a son of a god." However, we know because of this resurrection power for us and Himself, that "Truly this was the Son of God." Verse 63 states how the Pharisees and the chief priests and Pilate remembered "that when (He) was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I am to rise again.'" Rest assured that this is no deceiver whom we worship and serve; He is not a son of a god or even a son of God. "Truly this was the Son of God." That is what the resurrections prove.
