Bible Question: What was "the cup" that Jesus wanted to "pass on?" |
Bible Answer: Mommapbs, In Jesus' time the Jewish passover was celebrated with four cups. The first cup was followed by bitter herbs, a reminder of bondage. the second cup was preceeded by the reading of Exodus 12 and the singing of "the Little Hallel" Psalm 113. The third cup was "the cup of blessing" the Eucharist or Thanksgiving which Matthew, Mark, Luke and Paul write about and Jesus calls the cup of the new covenant. It was served withe meal of lamb and unleavened bread. The fourth cup, the climax of the Jewish passover meal was "the cup of consummation." It was preceeded by the singing of "The Great Hallel" Psalms 114-118. Mark 14:26 says that after the third cup, the cup of thanksgiving, after singing a hymn (the Great hallel), they went out to Gethsemane of the Mount of Olives without drink the final cup. After Jesus prayed that "this cup" the fourth cup be passed, he submitted to the will of the Father, was arrested, tortured and crucified. And several times he refused to drink wine or wine mixtures that were offered to Him. Until that is he was about to die. He then accepted vinegar (sour wine) on a spong at the end of a hyssop branch and said. "It is finished!" That is his salvific sacrifice was consumated.
