Bible Question: I read the answers given but they still don't really help in explaining why Jesus said that all of those things would happen before that generation passed away. Everything he stated has occurred except for his return. This verse includes his return in the events. So, did we miss it, or did it not happen? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Craney... Welcome to the forum! There have been lots of analysis of this passage, and the similar ones of Matthew 16:28; 23:36; Mark 13:30; and Luke 21:32. Indeed, many wise and learned people Christians have worked on it for some twenty centuries. On this forum you will predominantly find laity, along with a few pastors. Consequently, I do not think you will get a definitive answer that settles it. You see, part of it has to do with the eschatological presuppositions with which you approach these passages. Dispensationalists, futurists, preterists, partial preterists, etc. would tend to give it a different spin -- often with good reason. Clearly, however, Christ's Second Coming has not taken place. Thus, one may very logically conclude that (1) the Return is not actually part of the events; (2) none of the events have yet occurred. For a variety of reasons, too numerous to address here, I think (1) is more likely. There's a lot of prophecy mongering going on out there, but I think it is rarely beneficial. Fortunately, the Scriptures are packed full of things that we can talk about in definitive and exhaustive fashion. Indeed, those are the things that will always be of the greatest benefit to the believer. In Him, Doc |
