Bible Question (short): What does "this generation" mean?

Question (full): Does “this generation” mean “this generation”? How can one understand Jesus' reference to "this generation" (Matthew 24:34-35) as referring to any group of people other than Jesus' contemporaries, as something other than the people standing before Jesus at the time?
