AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 23:23 ¶ "Woe to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you give a tenth (tithe) of your mint and dill and cumin [focusing on minor matters], and have neglected the weightier [more important moral and spiritual] provisions of the Law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the [primary] things you ought to have done without neglecting the others. |
Bible Question: The Bible instructs us to tithe 10 percent of our income. As long as the tithe is used for the purpose of furthering the Gospel, does it matter by whom it is used? In other words, -- does the Bible indicate anywhere that this specific 10 percent is only considered a tithe if it is used to support an organized church? I would appreciate facts and/or opinions on this subject. Thanks and blessings to all. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Willownanny, This is largely a repost of #225573.. "Can a tithe to anyone outside of God and the church still be considered a tithe?" Scripture gives an example in Genesis 47:24-26 when the Israelites gave a one-fifth tithe to Pharaoh (and not to God). But most of the Biblical examples describe a tithe as giving to the LORD (Numbers 18:26). Scripture also indicates that it is not so important as to where the tithe goes (Deut. 14:22-23), but the condition of our hearts as we tithe: see Isaiah 1:13-19, Matthew 23:23, Mark 12:42, 1 Chronices 29:9, 2 Cor. 9:6-7. Therefore, the condition of our heart as we tithe is more important than where we actually contribute the tithe. But tithing to our fellow church brethren is shown in Scripture to be important (Acts 11:29; Romans 15:26; 2 Cor. 9:13). Blessings to you, Makarios |
