Bible Question: We have been having a small discussion about Matthew 22:14. It states "Many are called but few are chosen" - Our discussion is around the "many" - Does God only call Many? Who does He leave out? Why is it not "All are called and few chosen? Does anyone have the original text on this and can shed some enlightenment? |
Bible Answer: Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen. The Context of the verse makes the meaning very clear. Jesus gives a parable of a wedding invitation. The call went out to the Jews and they rejected it and even beat and killed the prophets, The call now goes out to the gentiles and everyone else.. Matthew 22:8-9 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. The Call is to all which is not a contradiction of saying many. If the call is to all, then it is also true that the call is to many. And yet few are chosen. Now here is the sobering part. there are many that come to the wedding thinking they are ready for it. And they are rejected.. I personally believe that it has to do with faith in Christ which cleanses us from sin and makes us live holy. The Cheap Grace message that says holiness is not important, leaves some with a false sense of security that they can indulge in their sins and still be let into the wedding feast in that day because they "go to church" and they "believe in Jesus" which is not the same kind of faith that saves. |
