Bible Question:
can you explain Mt 16: 28 Does Jesus mean that statement. |
Bible Answer: Hi, Four Square! This particular verse could have been the one on which the Apostles based the belief that Christ's Second Coming was to take effect in their own lifetime--an error they later corrected!: But there is one thing, my dear friends, that you must never forget: that with the Lord, a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not being slow in carrying out his promises, as some people think he is; rather is he being patient with you, wanting nobody to be lost and everybody to be brought to repentance. The Day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then with a roar the sky will vanish, the elements will catch fire and melt away, the earth and all that it contains will be burned up. (2 Peter 3:8-10) When we search the Scriptures we will find that there are many dualities (reflections) built into prophecies... Jesus may have been addressing the Second Coming in Matthew 16:28; this would make one of two things true: a) His Second Coming was then and there (very unlikely) or b) some of the disciples were made immortal so that they may be able to fulfill the promise (just as unlikely). The other view of this verse could be seen in light of John 4:23-24, 5:25; Mark 1:15; Luke 10:11, 21:31 and John 20:1 through 21:19; since not all who followed Jesus were true believers, only those who would remain in Him (faithful to His commandments) would be privy to the particular revelation of Matthew 16:28.
