AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 14:13 ¶ When Jesus heard about John, He left there privately in a boat and went to a secluded place. But when the crowds heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. [Mark 6:32-44; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-13] |
Subject: Jesus' response to John's beheading? |
Bible Note: Good observation, Steve! I believe that Jesus may have wept also, possibly in His own time in prayer, concerning John, who was greater than all those who have been born of women, but yet the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. Also, it is interesting to note that John declared that Jesus was to 'increase' and he was to 'decrease', and that his disciples should follow Jesus now, instead of him. But even in Jesus' grief for John, He showed compassion for those in need and fed the 5,000! Then He Himself sent the crowds away, while telling the disciples to go on ahead of Him in the boat. This gave Him time to pray by Himself until evening. The death of John and the 'next step' in the ministry of Jesus may have been part of this time alone that He needed with the Father. But yet, immediately after this, Jesus makes the miraculous walk on water! So not only was He fully prepared and ready to take on this 'next step', He Himself provided a miracle that shows His sovereignty! Is there anything that we can learn from Jesus' response, even while He may have been grieving for the death of John? Something that we could possibly 'model after' in our own lives? Blessings, Nolan! |
