Subject: God's Forgiveness of Sin |
Bible Note: The doctrine of perseverance (or preservation may be a better term) of the saints is the opposite of the view that one's salvation can be lost. You seem to have MacArthur's (and my) view down well. It is not that believers will attain sinlessness before ending up in the presence of Christ, but rather that the one whom God has truly regenerated He will continue to sanctify here on earth so that the saint will bear fruit. This fruit glorifies God and demonstrates outwardly the faith that is there in the believer's life. This sanctification is a work of God's free grace as well, and is subsequent to our justification (being declared righteous on account of Christ's work on our behalf). The Reformed view certainly isn't the "victorious Christian life" view, either. As Paul outlines in Romans 7, the Christian's life on earth will be characterized by a struggle with sin until he dies. The Christian does indeed experience progressive victory ofver sin, but it is not a battle that is won this side of Heaven. We will never be pleasing to God in all that we do, doing His will completely while we exist in our current state. The good news in that, however, is that sin shall not be master over the saint, either (Romans 6:14). I was not criticizing you, by the way; I was correcting a false view of Scripture that was presented in an article you copied and pasted to the forum. The Bible is useful for correction (2 Timothy 3:16-17), and I was using it as such. Hope that you didn't misinterpret my intentions! --Joe! |
