Bible Note: Nick, do you know much about the religious leaders of Jesus' day? What some of these leaders did was add to the written word. They added some 600 or so rules and placed more importance on these than the word alone. So in a way can you see that adding something to the written word that is not there is something the Lord does not like? He stated that in Revelation. Rev 22:18 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; Rev 22:19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book In saying this I believe it is a warning to all of us to be very careful how we handle the word of God. Today, we have the advantage of having resources to study the word of God. We have the written word. We have bible dictionaries and all kinds of aids to help us in our studies so we can study and the word ourselves. There are many good religious leaders today. How we discern which are the good ones is to take what they say and line it up with scripture. We see the example in Acts 17:11; After hearing the gospel from Paul and Silas, these new believers "were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily, to see whether these things were so" |
