Bible Question: Does anyone happen to have a VERY literal translation of this verse? I mean like word for word direct from the Hebrew text. I have my text, but some of the words I don't understand what they mean. Tryin to learn :) Thanks for any help given :-D |
Bible Answer: Greetings Sbbqb7n16, Here are a few different translations of this verse, from 'formal equivalence' translations.. "'Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.'" [NASB] "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and will show thee great things, and difficult, which thou knowest not." [ASV] "Call unto Me, and I do answer thee, yea, I declare to thee great and fenced things--thou hast not known them." [YLT] "Call to Me, and I will answer you; and I will tell you great and inscrutable things; you do not know them." [LITV] "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not." [KJV] "Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know." [NKJV] "Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known." [ESV] "If you call to me I shall answer, and tell you great and mysterious things of which you are still unaware." [REB] "Call on me in prayer and I will answer you. I will show you great and mysterious [4] things which you still do not know about." [NET Bible] "[4]tn This passive participle or adjective is normally used to describe cities or walls as “fortified” or “inaccessible.” All the lexicons, however, agree in seeing it used here metaphorically of “secret” or “mysterious” things, things that Jeremiah could not know apart from the Lord’s revelation. Keown, Scalise, Smothers, Jeremiah 26-52, p. 170 make the interesting observation that the word is used here in a context in which the fortifications of Jerusalem are about to fall to the Babylonians; the fortified things in God’s secret counsel fall through answer to prayer." [Taken from The NET Bible, http://www.bible.org/netbible/index.htm] "Call [7121] unto [413] me, and I will answer [6030] thee, and show [5046] thee great [1419] and mighty [1219] things, which thou knowest [3045] not. [3808]" (KJV with Strong's Numbers) 7121 - Hebrew 'qara' (call out, address by name) 413 - Hebrew 'el el' (towards) 6030 - Hebrew 'anah' (to heed, pay attention, respond, answer) 5046 - Hebrew 'nagad' (to manifest, announce, explain) 1419 - Hebrew 'gadol' (great [in any sense], exceeding) 1219 - Hebrew 'batsar' (clip off, cut off, be isolated) 3045 - Hebrew 'yada' (to know, acknowledge, be aware) 3808 - Hebrew 'lo lo loh' (not, the simple or abstract negation) Using Strong's Exhaustive Concordance... I hope this helps! Makarios |
