Bible Question: According to my studies, the 70-year captivity of the Southern Kingdom began around 607 B.C. According to scripture, this was God's judgment for the Israelites ignoring the land's sabbath rest for the previous 490 years (70 times 7). My question is what happened around 1097 B.C. that caused them to no longer rest the land at the seventh year? |
Bible Answer: What Ed says sounds right. Another possibility might simply be the expense. Failing to realize that resting land returns nitrogen to the soil, producing better crops later on, it was just too much of an expense to them to let the ground lay fallow. We're all awful good at justifying away what hurts our pocketbooks. |
