Bible Question: According to my studies, the 70-year captivity of the Southern Kingdom began around 607 B.C. According to scripture, this was God's judgment for the Israelites ignoring the land's sabbath rest for the previous 490 years (70 times 7). My question is what happened around 1097 B.C. that caused them to no longer rest the land at the seventh year? |
Bible Answer: I believe Israel fell into apathy and complacency around this time. They were trusting less in God and more upon their ability. In around 1043 they demanded a King no longer satisfied with the theocracy they had enjoyed. They had just come through the cycles of the Judges where they were up and down, moving from serving God, then away until actually serving idols which then brought God’s judgement and attacks from surrounding nations and then repentance calling out to God for deliverance. Now they had enjoying some years of peace and decided they needed a King to be equal to the rest of the world. The rejection of God shows where their thought process was. EdB |
