NASB | Jeremiah 18:10 if it does evil in My sight by not obeying My voice, then I will think better of the good with which I had promised to bless it. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Jeremiah 18:10 and if they do evil in My sight by not obeying My voice, then I will reverse My decision concerning the good with which I had promised to bless them. |
Bible Question: Why is it that God, as an omniscient being will sometimes say "This will happen" but then allow that to be reversed by people's dumb (or smart) decisions?? I am not trying to be a smart alec here, just dont know what to think. Did this change with the new covenant?? I struggle with this |
Bible Answer: Mal 3:6 "For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed. Num. 23:19 "God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? Ex 32:14 So the LORD changed His mind about the harm which He said He would do to His people. Jer. 26:13 "Now therefore amend your ways and your deeds and obey the voice of the LORD your God; and the LORD will change His mind about the misfortune which He has pronounced against you. Above we have two verses that state that God does not change his mind, i.e. repent. We also have a sample of verses that say that God has or will change his mind, i.e. repent. How do we understand these verses or does the Bible contradict itself? No, God's word does not contradict itself. And God does not change his mind. God is immutable. He does not change; he is eternally the same. Then how do we understand the verses that say he has or will change his mind? We understand such verses as anthropomorphisms, describing God's actions as if he were a man. But God is not a man that he should repent. What he has done, is doing, will do, he has had a mind to do from eternity. And he has not changed his mind about it. When Ninevah repented at the preaching of Jonah, God knew that they would and had planned that they would from eternity. Heb. 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Peace, |
