AMPLIFIED 2015 | Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Listen carefully, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will call his name Immanuel (God with us). [Is 9:6; Jer 31:22; Mic 5:3-5; Matt 1:22, 23] |
Bible Question:
Can anybody tell me why translating Isaiah 7:14 "young woman" instead of "virgin" is advantagious? Thanks |
Bible Answer: Hi, Hebers... Possibly because it might be a bit more literal. The English word virgin has an additional significance of a person who has not had sexual intercourse. The Hebrew word "almah" may not always carry that meaning. The word is used in six other places in Scripture: Genesis 24:43; Exodus 2:8; Psalms 68:25; Proverbs 30:19; Song of Solomon 1:3; 6:8. Take a look at them to see for yourself which is a better fit. By the way, the male version of this word only appears in 1 Samuel 17:56 and 20:22. That might be worth a look, too. In Him, Doc |
