Subject: Does the Word say anything about music? |
Bible Note: Hi, brother Tim... So if I read you correctly, in your study you found one passage in which God dislikes the music that He hears. Thank you for the research. I've been looking as well. Let me add to your observation some of my own on this topic: The events of Exodus 32:15-20 and Daniel 3:1-7 are instances where God, by inference, disliked the music. What about Isaiah 14:11? In other passages He responds positively to music: 2 Chronicles 5:11-14, 2 Chronicles 20:21, Isaiah 30:29-32, 1 Samuel 10:5-11, 2 Kings 3:14-15, and Acts 16:25-28. Some music is disliked by evil spirits, adversely influencing them (1 Samuel 16:14-23). (Clearly music communicates in the spiritual realm.) We know from Zephaniah 3:17 that God Himself will sing. Some believe that Job 38:7 suggests that God even originated music before men existed. Obviously God does have an opinion about music. Therefore, it cannot be said that music is amoral. All things are to be brought into subjection to Jesus Christ (Hebrews 2:8). The church in particular is mentioned as having every aspect under Him (Ephesians 1:22). From these statements, I'm not sure there is *any* aspect of human life that can be deemed amoral. Every part of us as believers belong to Him. If some music pleases God and some music displeases Him, if some music edifies believers and some music does not, is it not incumbent on us to examine the use of music in our own lives, regardless the source? Paul says, "Prove all things, hold fast that which is good." (1 Thessalonians 5:21) In Him, Doc |
